It took planes, trains, and automobiles on Friday to bring me home to surprise my mama for her birthday. I'd been planning it since summer, hoping that I'd keep the secret through near-daily conversations on the phone.
We spent the weekend drinking white wine and eating Indian food, loving the twinkle lights downtown, baking donuts with the sweetest neighbors, taking a stroll through the sunshine down near the water. We had a cake made from white beans and just a few gifts -- new sewing shears and two plane tickets to anywhere she'd like to visit. It was the perfect way to celebrate the woman who insisted she wanted nothing, absolutely nothing for her birthday.
